Goodwill stores in Virginia

CollegeHunksDonating to Goodwill is a simple way to make a big difference in our community!

Here are some “Frequently Asked Questions” that may come in handy as you get ready to donate.

Where can I donate my no longer needed items?

Goodwill has over 75 locations where you can drop off your gently used items. Use our locator to find the ones nearest you.

Does Goodwill offer a pick-up service for donations?

In order to keep our costs down and optimize the accessibility and effectiveness of our programs, we do not pick up donations. Instead, we offer convenient donation centers and bins throughout central and coastal Virginia. All of our retail stores also accept donated items. Our associates will gladly assist you in unloading donations from your vehicle.

In central Virginia, we are pleased to partner with “College Hunks Hauling Junk.” For a small fee, their team is available to pick up your gently-used items and deliver them to Goodwill.

How do I go about inquiring about a pick up through “College Hunks Hauling Junk?”

Goodwill offers a 48 hour priority, fee-based pick up option to central Virginia residents who wish to have their donated items picked up with College Hunks Hauling Junk. The priority service does charge a fee but includes benefits such as:

  • Removal of items from anywhere inside the property
  • Removal of junk and items Goodwill cannot accept
  • A discount College Hunks Hauling Junk pricing.

  • Pick-up of items difficult to transport including furnishings and large amounts of donated items at one time.
  • To inquire about a pick up and get an estimate, visit College Hunks Hauling Junk online by clicking computer monitors, printers, scanners and other related devices

    RAM chips, cases and cables
  • Office technology including copiers, plotters, and
    telephone systems
  • IT equipment including mainframe systems, servers,
power supplies, surge suppressors, and components
  • What items is Goodwill unable to accept?

It’s hard to say “no thank you” to a donation. However, if an item is not in clean, salable condition, the cost of handling and disposal requires use of funds that would otherwise support our mission. We cannot accept certain items including but not limited to:

  • Large household appliances: Stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, air conditioners, water heaters. Goodwill does not sell these items in the stores and there are strict ordinances concerning their disposal.
  • Large items that do not work: Large CRT (Tube) TVs, microwave ovens, copy machines.
  • Building materials: Carpet, shutters, doors, windows, toilets, lumber, concrete, bricks, stones.
  • Mattresses and box springs.
  • Upholstered couches and chairs which are torn, soiled or otherwise damaged.
  • Televisions as follows:
  • Cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions
  • We can accept working, flat panel, non-cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions.
  • Automobile parts: Tires, wheels, batteries, seats, body parts and engines.
  • Paint and chemicals of any kind.
  • Kerosene and gas heaters and appliances.
  • Large truck loads of items when over 50% of the load is unusable.
  • Weapons, guns, ammunition, and related items.
  • CPSC frequently recalled items: Infant furniture, car seats, baby cribs, strollers, carriages, playpens/play yards, children’s items containing lead or phthalates.
  • These lists are to be used as guidelines. There may be other items not listed that we can use in the stores or which must be turned down due to size, condition or suitability. We appreciate your help to keep our donation sites and retail stores clean by dropping off donations off during business hours only.

If you have any questions concerning donations, please call (800) 922-0661.

Why should I donate to Goodwill rather than another organization?

Goodwill puts your donations to work! More than 84 percent of Goodwill’s revenue goes directly into employment and training programs for anyone with challenges to employment. Goodwill stores also provide jobs and work experience for many of the individuals in Goodwill’s programs.

Unfortunately, some for-profit companies arrange to use a charity’s name to collect donations in exchange for a flat fee or percentage of the revenue. Often this is not evident to those donating, and the percentage that is given to the charity may be less than 5 cents for every dollar spent.

When you donate to Goodwill, you can be confident knowing that your donations are sold locally and contribute to programs and services that make a difference in the communities of central and coastal Virginia.

What is my donation worth when I claim a tax deduction?

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires donors to value their own donated items. To help guide you, Goodwill Industries International has compiled a list providing price ranges for items commonly sold in Goodwill stores. Assume the items you donate are in good condition, and remember: prices are only estimated values.

What happens to donated items that aren’t sold in Goodwill stores?

The stores are typically your donation’s first stop, but donations that do not sell there are routed to our outlets where they are priced by the pound and deeply discounted. We also operate an auction in central Virginia where we sell those goods. We also recycle many items that are not salable by reselling them to salvage dealers. Our goal always is to get the most value from your donations allowing for the greatest positive impact on the community.
