Springfield Illinois Mall stores
The Limited store at White Oaks Mall in Springfield is scheduled to close Saturday, ending a run that began with the opening of the mall in the mid-1970s.
Employees of the store on the lower-level of the Sears wing confirmed the closing on Thursday but referred questions to corporate owners. Media outlets across the country in the past week have reported mall closings scheduled for Saturday, including in the Belleville and St. Louis markets.
A message left for majority owner Sun Capital Partners Inc. of Boca Raton, Florida, was not immediately returned.
Financial publications, including The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, have reported The Limited is exploring liquidation of 240 stores nationwide through bankruptcy. The Limited also has stores at malls in Champaign, Bloomington and Decatur, according to the company website, thelimited.com.
Sun Capital acquired The Limited Brands Inc. in 2007.
According to archives at The State Journal-Register, The Limited was among retailers when White Oaks Mall opened in 1977. The company at one point in the early 1990s had five mall stores under different brand names.
