SPRINGFIELD — A 31-year-old Springfield man is accused of shoplifting more than $200 worth of clothing from the Target store in Gateway and threatening to shoot store security guards before making his getaway on Thursday evening.
Warren Sengei Millington was arrested at 7:16 p.m. at the Dari Mart store on Harlow Road near Beverly Street, 45 minutes after the robbery was reported. Millington was in possession of the stolen clothing, methamphetamine, heroin and two counterfeit $20 bills, Springfield police said.
A Target employee called police at 6:35 p.m., claiming a man had come into the store, taken several items of clothing and shoved the items into his backpack before walking toward an exit. When confronted by the store’s security guards and told to return the stolen items, Millington allegedly refused. The guards threatened to handcuff Millington, but he ran away, bumping into a woman who was leaving the store, police said.
Millington then tripped and fell in the parking lot as the guards chased him, police said. Millington got up, then allegedly turned toward the officers with his hand in his jacket pocket and said, “If you touch me again, I will shoot you with my pistol.”
The guards backed away and waited for police.
With the help of a police dog, authorities searched the area, eventually locating Millington inside the Dari Mart.
He did not have a gun, police said.
Millington was booked into the Lane County Jail on charges of second-degree robbery, second-degree theft, drug possession, possession of a forgery instrument, trespass and parole violations.
Second-degree robbery is a Measure 11 offense that carries a mandatory minimum jail sentence of nearly six years.
